What is Claude Code? A plain-English explanation

Updated on 7 October 2026

Claude Code is an AI assistant made by Anthropic that works directly on your computer: you tell it in everyday words what you want to build, and it reads the files, writes the code, runs commands and checks the result. It does all of this only with your permission.

In short: it isn't a chat you copy answers from, it's an agent that does the work in your project folder. Below you'll find how it differs from ChatGPT, what you can do with it without knowing how to code, where you use it, what it costs and how to start.

What does it mean that Claude Code is an "agent"?

It means it takes a task, makes its own plan and carries out the steps one after another until it's done. A regular chat only answers you. An agent does the work.

In practice, when you ask for something, Claude Code:

  • reads the existing files to understand what you already have;
  • creates new files and edits old ones;
  • runs commands, for example to start the website and see if it works;
  • tells you what it did and what comes next.

It's like a handyman you call to your home. You say "I'd like a shelf here". He looks around, makes a plan and gets to work. But before drilling into the wall, he asks: "Is that OK?".

The official documentation describes it the same way: a coding assistant that understands your whole project and works across several files and tools to get the job done (Claude Code overview, checked on 7 October 2026). If the word is new to you, see also what an agent is in the glossary.

How is Claude Code different from ChatGPT?

The main difference: ChatGPT, used as a chat, gives you an answer in text, while Claude Code makes the changes directly in your files.

With a chat, you're the one copying code, piece by piece, into the right place. If something breaks, you paste the error back into the chat and start over. With Claude Code, it sees the files itself, writes where it needs to, starts the page and spots the error without you showing it.

An example. You want a booking button on a cafe's website.

  • With a chat: you get a block of code. You look for where to put it, paste it, save, open the page, see the button is misaligned and go back to the chat.
  • With Claude Code: you write "add a booking button that opens WhatsApp, under the opening hours". It finds the file, shows you what it will change, asks for permission and makes the change.

To be fair: OpenAI now has a coding agent too, Codex. The full comparison, with a table, is in the guide Claude Code vs ChatGPT vs Cursor.

What can you do with Claude Code if you can't code?

You can build small, useful things from scratch without writing the code yourself. A few realistic examples to start with:

  • a website for a business: a cafe, a barber shop, a workshop, with a menu, opening hours and a booking button;
  • a page about you or about a project;
  • small tools that make your work easier: a shopping list, a price calculator, a report from a few files;
  • fixes to something that already exists, explained in plain words.

You don't need to write code. You need two things: to ask clearly for what you want and to check the result. Both can be learned. To see the whole path on an example, read how to build a website with AI, without coding.

What it doesn't do: it can't guess what's in your head. If you ask vaguely ("make me a nice website"), you get something generic. The clearer you are about what you want, where and how to check it, the better the result. That's what module 01 of the course is about: what does a good message look like.

Where do you use Claude Code?

The main place is the terminal, the window where you type commands as text. But it's not the only one. According to the official documentation, Claude Code works in:

  • the terminal, the version with the most features;
  • VS Code and JetBrains editors, as an extension, where you see changes right in the files;
  • the Claude desktop app, in the "Code" tab, with nothing else to install;
  • the web, at claude.ai/code, including from the Claude app on your phone.

They all run on the same "engine", so what you learn in one place works in the others. If you've never opened a terminal, don't worry: it's just a window with text and you can't break anything by opening it. See what the terminal is.

How much does Claude Code cost?

Claude Code is included in every paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. The free claude.ai plan does not include it.

The cheapest plan, Pro, costs $20 a month plus tax, or $17 a month if you pay for a whole year up front ($200). You can cancel any time. Prices are from claude.com/pricing, checked on 7 October 2026.

All the plans, the usage limits and the pay-as-you-go option are explained in the guide how much does Claude Code cost.

Is it safe to let it work on your computer?

Yes, as long as you know how permissions work. Claude Code doesn't change files or run commands without asking you. You approve each step, or tell it in advance what it may do on its own.

A few things worth knowing from the start:

  • you can stop it any time with the Esc key;
  • Shift+Tab switches the working mode, for example to plan mode, where it only proposes a plan and changes nothing;
  • it works in the folder you started it in, so begin in a test folder, not in your important documents.

More on what it may and may not do in module 03 of the course and in the glossary, under permissions.

How do you get started with Claude Code?

You need three things: a computer (Mac, Windows or Linux), a paid Claude plan and about ten minutes.

  1. Install it. One command, about two minutes. The exact steps are in the guide how to install Claude Code on Mac and Windows.
  2. Sign in. Type claude in the terminal and log in in your browser with your claude.ai account.
  3. Give it a small first task. For example: "tell me what's in this folder".

If you want the whole path, from installing to your first project, in one place, read the Claude Code tutorial for beginners.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Code free?

No. You need a paid Claude plan (the cheapest is Pro) or a pay-as-you-go API account. The free claude.ai plan doesn't include Claude Code.

Can I use it in a language other than English?

Yes. You can write to it in your own language and it answers in that language. Some of the program's messages and the commands are in English, but there are few of them and you learn them quickly.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. You need to describe clearly what you want and check what it did. The course starts from zero.

Does it work on Windows?

Yes. It works on macOS, Windows and Linux. On Windows you install it from PowerShell.

What's the difference between Claude and Claude Code?

Claude is the assistant you chat with on claude.ai. Claude Code is the version that works in your projects: it reads and writes files and runs commands.

Learn it step by step

The "Claude Code for Beginners" course has 1–2 minute lessons you can take on your phone too. The first two modules, from installing to how to ask for things, are free, complete, no card needed. If you hit a new word, look it up in the glossary. See also the whole course.
