Claude Code vs ChatGPT vs Cursor: which one is right for you
In short: ChatGPT is mainly a chat that answers you in text, Cursor is a code editor with AI built in, and Claude Code is an agent that works directly in your files, from the terminal or from other apps. For a beginner who wants to build something real without writing code, the biggest difference is who does the copying, pasting and checking: you or the AI.
Below is an honest comparison, with a table, starting prices checked on the official pages on 7 October 2026, and the situations where each one is the better pick. Zero2App teaches Claude Code, but is not affiliated with Anthropic, OpenAI or Cursor.
What is the difference, in short?
| ChatGPT | Cursor | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A chat assistant, from OpenAI | A code editor with an AI agent built in | An AI coding agent, from Anthropic |
| Where you work | In the browser or the app | In the Cursor app, on your computer | In the terminal, in VS Code, in the Claude desktop app or on the web |
| Who writes to your files | In chat, you copy the answer; Codex, the OpenAI agent, works in files | The agent, inside the editor, with your approval | The agent, with your approval |
| What you see | A conversation | Your project files, like a programmer | A conversation, while the changes land in your files |
| Free plan | Yes, with limited Codex access | Yes, with limited agent requests | No; you need a paid Claude plan |
| First paid plan | Go, $8 a month; Plus, $20 a month | Pro, $20 a month | Pro, $20 a month ($17 with annual billing) |

What does ChatGPT do well, and where does it stop?
ChatGPT is great for questions, explanations, writing and ideas. If you want to understand what an HTML file is, or need the text for your "About us" page, a chat is perfect.
When you use it as a plain chat for a project, though, you do the glue work: you copy the code, paste it into the right file, save, test and come back with the error. For one page, that works. For a project with ten files, it gets tiring and easy to get wrong.
OpenAI also has a coding agent, Codex, which works more like an agent. On the official pricing page it shows up with limited access on the free plan and included in Plus.
What does Cursor do well, and who is it for?
Cursor is an app where you write code, an editor, with an AI agent built in. You see every file in the project, you see exactly which lines the AI changes, and you can step in by hand at any time.
It is the natural choice if you already know a little code or want to learn to read it. For a complete beginner, the interface can feel overwhelming at first: lots of panels, files and buttons.
A useful detail: Claude Code has an extension for VS Code-style editors and can be installed in Cursor too, according to the official documentation. So you don't necessarily have to choose between them.
What does Claude Code do well, and where is it harder?
Claude Code is an agent: it takes a task, makes a plan, reads your files, changes them, runs commands and checks the result. You describe what you want and approve the steps. You don't need to know where each file lives.
Some people call this way of working "vibe coding": you describe what you want in words, and the AI writes the code. You can do that with Claude Code, with one important difference: you have it check its work and you look at what it does, instead of accepting things blindly.
Where it's harder: its main home is the terminal, a text window that feels scary at first. You get used to it in minutes, and if you'd rather skip the terminal, there's the Claude desktop app and the web version. There's also no free plan: you need at least Claude Pro. Which one should you choose?
It depends on what you want to do:
- Want to learn, ask questions, write text? ChatGPT or the Claude chat. You don't need an agent.
- Know a little code and want to see everything in front of you? Cursor, possibly with the Claude Code extension inside it.
- Don't know code and want to build something concrete, like a website or a small tool? An agent like Claude Code. Describe, approve, check.
- Want to spend as little as possible at first? Start with the free chat plans to learn the basics. For an agent that works on your computer, you'll pay sooner or later with any of them.
There's no single "best" for everyone. Many people use two: a chat for questions and an agent for the work.
What does the same task look like in all three?
The task: "build a one-page website for a cafe, with a menu and a WhatsApp booking button".
- In a chat: you get the code in the reply. You create the file, paste it in and open it in the browser. If the button doesn't work, you copy the problem back into the chat.
- In Cursor: you ask the agent inside the editor. It creates the file, and you see the code and the changes right in the editor. You approve and open the page.
- In Claude Code: you type the request in the conversation. Claude can first ask you for the details (name, opening hours, phone), then creates the file, opens it in the browser and checks the WhatsApp link. You approve each step.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use Claude Code and ChatGPT at the same time?
Yes. They are separate services with separate subscriptions. Many people use a chat for questions and an agent for the work.
Is Claude Code better than Cursor?
Not in general. They're different tools: Cursor is an editor, Claude Code is an agent. For a beginner who doesn't want to read code, an agent is usually easier to use.
Which one is cheaper?
ChatGPT and Cursor have free plans with limits; Claude Code doesn't. ChatGPT Go, at $8 a month, is the cheapest paid plan, but it only has limited access to Codex. For an agent without those limits, the first suitable plan costs around $20 a month for all three (ChatGPT Plus, Cursor Pro, Claude Pro), before tax.
Do I need to write in English?
No. You can write to all three in your own language.
