Which plan do you need?
Installation and your first project · lesson 2 of 12
Codex comes bundled with your ChatGPT account. Your ChatGPT plan decides what you get. Here are the prices from the official page, as of 8 October 2026, in US dollars per month:
| Plan | Price | What you get in Codex |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Codex only in the app on your computer, with a lighter model |
| Go | $8 | For Codex, the same as Free |
| Plus | $20 | On top of Free: Codex on the web, in the terminal, in VS Code, on iOS and in the cloud |
| Pro | from $100 | Everything in Plus; for now, no five-hour limit |
The model is the AI “brain” behind Codex: some are more powerful, others lighter and faster.
On Free and Go, access to Codex is being rolled out gradually. It may not have reached you yet.
Every plan has a usage limit, meaning how much you can work with Codex. It’s measured over windows of a few hours and, sometimes, per week. It isn’t a fixed number of messages: a big task uses more than a small one.

Our honest advice:
- For modules 00–01 and lab 0, try Free first.
- For the whole course you need Plus. Modules 10–12 use the cloud, the terminal and VS Code, which aren’t included in Free.
- You don’t need Pro for this course.
