How do you create the project folder?
Installation and your first project · lesson 6 of 12
Codex works inside a folder you give it. That folder becomes your project.
- Open Finder (on a Mac) or File Explorer (on Windows), the program you use to browse files.
- Go into
Documents. - Make a new folder and name it
subscriptions.
Why such a plain name?
No accents, no spaces, no symbols.
Some tools trip over names like My Subscriptions (2026)!.
A simple name saves you from strange errors.
Now open the folder in Codex:
- press
⌘Oon a Mac orCtrl+Oon Windows, the “open folder” command; - choose the
subscriptionsfolder and confirm.
The app turns it into a local project: a group of chats linked to a folder on your computer. Next time you’ll find it straight in the sidebar.
One last, important step: under the composer, open the permissions button and choose Ask for approval.
That way Codex works only in this folder and asks you before going beyond it.
