How do you work safely with Codex?
Welcome to Codex · lesson 10 of 12
Codex works on your files, so what you let it do matters. A few simple rules keep you clear of almost every problem:
- Give it a folder just for the project. Don’t let it work across your whole
Documentsfolder or your whole computer. - Start with
Ask for approval. It’s the permission mode where Codex works inside the project folder and asks you before going beyond it. You pick it from the permissions button under the box where you type. - Read approval requests. When Codex stops and asks for permission, read what it wants to do. If you don’t understand, ask it before you approve.
- Avoid
Full access. In this mode Codex is no longer kept inside the project folder and can damage files without asking. - Don’t give it passwords or bank details. Not in messages, not in project files.
- Don’t trust everything a web page says. A site can hide instructions meant for AI. Treat them like a suspicious email.
You cover permissions in depth in module 05. Save points, which let you undo any change, come in module 04.
